Social Responsibility
Zebra Crossings provides unique handmade items that improve
the lives of the producers who make them and whenever possible
preserve the health of our environment. We measure our success
not just by our financial statements, but equally by the amount of
social benefit we provide to our trade partners. We view these
goals not as opposing forces, but as mutually-beneficial and self-
perpetuating. The larger we grow, the more people we aid in
meeting their basic life needs – not from a handout, but through
their entrepreneurial spirit. We believe the foundation of personal
freedom is the ability to provide for oneself and one’s family. We
achieve these dual goals by:
- Creating employment opportunities among disadvantaged
populations in both rural and urban areas
- Ensuring fair wages are paid to our trade partners
- Fostering connections between our customers and trade
partners
- Educating our customers about opportunities to create
social change through their consumer choices
FAQ
What is a fair wage?
Producers receive a fair wage when they are paid fairly for their
products. This means that trade partners are paid at least that
country's minimum wage. Since the minimum wage is often not
enough for basic survival, whenever feasible, producers are paid a
living wage, which enables them to cover basic needs, including
food, shelter, education and health care for their families. Paying
fair wages does not necessarily mean that products cost more.
Zebra Crossings works directly with producers, so we are able to
cut costs and return a greater percentage of the retail price to the
producers.
What does “fair” really mean?
The word "fair" can mean a lot of different things to different
people. At Zebra Crossings, "fair trade" means that trading
partnerships are based on reciprocal benefits and mutual respect,
that prices paid to producers reflect the work they perform, and
that national health, safety, and wage laws are enforced.
